Avelo Diver is an Open Water Scuba Certificaiton Course. If you are already certified you are ready for the Avelo Essentials Course. Learning how to dive using Avelo is amazing. With Avelo you are never out of control. It’s always easy to swim up or down. You never sink unless you want to. You never surface unless you decide to. You are always in control of your dive. And learning how to dive on Avelo is easier than learning how to dive Standard Scuba. On Avelo you become a better diver faster because it’s a more natural feeling experience.

Swimmer’s Buoyancy
When you go swimming in a pool or ocean you enjoy swimmer’s buoyancy. As swimmers without scuba gear we are just a little buoyant. We float but it’s easy to swim down if we want. If we stop swimming down we slowly rise up to the surface again. That is what we mean by swimmer’s buoyancy.

When you enter the water wearing the Avelo system you experience the familiar feeling of swimmer’s buoyancy. The first thing we do in the water is a weight check to optimize your swimmer’s buoyancy. The goal is to be 1 lb positive in buoyancy. Next you run the pump with an open purge valve to prime it. After a minute the pump stops automatically. You close the valve, wait 10 seconds for the battery to recover, and run the pump again. Now you are slowly adding water to the bottom of the tank. Like a submarine adding water to a ballast chamber. When the pump stops you have added 2 lbs of water to the tank and are now 1 pound negative in buoyancy. It’s time to dive. You exhale and slowly sink beneath the waves. After 4-6 seconds of slow sinking you turn and swim down like diving to the bottom of a pool. You begin normal diving breathes and slip into perfect neutral buoyancy. At the end of the dive after swimming up you open the purge valve and are more buoyant on the surface.

What is Neutral Buoyancy?

Neutral buoyancy is what we want to experience as divers. We neither float up or sink down. As we gently breathe our air we stay at the depth we chose. We are at ease underwater and able to relax into the experience of diving.

A rock dropped into water usually sinks. We call this negative buoyancy.

By the end of the Avelo Diver course, the new scuba diver will have an intuitive sense of neutral buoyancy and be focusing on the environment around them.

Avelo Edge
At the end of each day of diving we look at your dive profile on “Avelo Edge”. Your dive profile shows your depth, pump and purge actions, breathing rate, and your buoyancy. Your dive is analyzed and given an efficiency score. Avelo Edge is a training tool that is unique to Avelo and provides you with immediate feedback on your dive and shows you how you can more quickly become a more efficient diver. It helps you become a better diver faster.

Course Details
The Avelo Diver Course is three days long following successful completion of the elearning. The first day involves 2 confined water dives where you learn skills needed to be a Scuba Diver. There are two swim tests. A 10 minute float/tread water and a 300 yard swim with fins, mask, and snorkel. A full list of the skills are included in the elearning. The goal in day 1 is to learn the skills and become comfortable diving the Avelo System in a confined water environment.

Day two and three are the fun days. This involves 2 boat dives each day out of Kewalo Basin. During these 4 dives you will demonstrate some skills and begin your underwater adventure in the ocean.

Post Certification
After completing your Avelo Divers Certificaiton you can dive the Avelo System at any Avelo Dive Center around the world. If you want to dive standard you will need a crossover Certificaiton. Since Avelo Diver is a brand new Certificaiton there are currently no crossover certifications available. We anticipate this will change soon. If you become an Avelo Divers at Oahu Travel Divers you can dive the Avelo System on any of our charters at the club rate for standard Scuba for 2 years. Currently this is $110 for a 2 tank charter. Wetsuit rental is extra.
